ALWAYS DREAM BIG

All work skills become tedious and dreary. We need to upgrade and update them.

Pessimistic people say  that motivation ever lasts or  ever works. However, the truth is instead of sitting idle, it is best to keep doing something than to, merely condemn it that it does not work. Why not, such individuals try to find something to work. After we have worn clean clothes, they get dirty, after some use, and then sent for either dry-cleaning or washing.

Can we say that washing does not help? It only means that certain tasks have to be, done repeatedly. After you have taken a bath today, it does not mean, that it would hold good for the next one-month or one year.
You have to do it repeatedly; the same is true of motivation. Motivation feelings is discovered instantaneously.
There are certain people who are always sluggard. I had a young man, as my Private Secretary, otherwise fit and fashionable, who always find excuse not to work and tell me that he had finished all the work. It appears that he had tried his hand at a number of jobs, but nobody after trying him for a few days wanted him.
It is a tragic thing, that instead of focusing on doing the best now, some people look for the illusory future. Such people put off living, in the expectation of reaching a magical rose garden, instead of enjoying the blooming roses which are with in their reach now itself. Newton propounded a law that “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.” In other words, every action or cause will produce an effect. Both are absolute and undeviating in every circumstance, and under every condition. Our thoughts govern our life and all of our behaviour stems, from the thoughts that preceded them.
So if you want to change your behaviour, then change your thoughts. We cannot change anything in our life without first altering the igniting cause. Any cause begins with our thoughts.

The idea of having to change, makes some people excruciating and distressed. So such people remain, where they are. The choice to change and improve lies with each individual. Though we do not know, what future holds for us, but one thing is certain, that it will not be the same as the present.
Always, dream big, though you may not realize all your dreams. It is a greater misfortune and a catastrophe not to have expectation. Dwight D.Eisenhower rightly said, “There is no victory at bargain basement prices.”

Never be a Half Success
All of us desire to be, known as aces in whatever we do. It is the fondest wish of every human being to be, considered as successful. Generally, success and happiness go together. Instead of inventing the wheel, why not take advantage of the already existing invention. Learn from the experience of successful people, which either many of them have penned down in their own autobiographies or available in the biographies written by other. When faced with a problem, ask yourself what a successful person would have done in similar circumstances and then make your decisions accordingly. If you can directly talk or associate with successful people, try to learn from them as to how they reached where they are.
As a principle, avoid negative failed, unsuccessful people and gloomy and depressing people. They are devastators and not developers. If you want to succeed, you should direct, focus and concentrate your powers on your purpose and aim. A reason, for failure of most people in life is that they only meander through their life and are not able to decide what they want. The result is that such people never become masters of anything in particular.  Concentration or Focus means, converging totally on this business and directing yourself, to do precisely, what you want to do. Focus is imperative and crucial, to all success in all fields. The person who does not concentrate, will become, a half success, a mediocrity or complete failure. Despite traffic regulations, that you must not use mobile phones, while driving, a number of people do it, leading to fatal accidents. Obviously, they are not focusing on driving.
Many people say that they are in no mood to work. Remember, that your moods are, primarily the end result, of what you focus on.
The secret and basis of all success is to focus attentively, on the one outcome we desire. Focused mind, aptitude and competence, is one of the strongest forces of the world. A sharp in focus picture of our  head can bring about miracles. Concentration is the basis of all ability and clout. Doctors, who perform complicated operation on heart or eye, for correcting any body default, are able to do so, only through the power of focus.
Focus, it is nothing but matter of managing our thoughts, through concentration. It is fastening or gluing, your concentration on a given issue or a subject matter, at will, regardless length of time, you choose. This is the secret corridor to power and prosperity.
Winners and Champions whether in science or humanity or sports, or studies, develop this to a remarkable degree. We need to be learning to focus all the timeabout wonders , whether during the training or during actual performance.
Our life is governed and directed by our thoughts. Thoughts symbolize energy and verve. Our habitual thoughts, whether conscious or unconscious, whether factually and plainly, bring into being our existence. Our thoughts attract similar people, events and circumstances to our life and our inclinations. By becoming skilled to deliberately and by design, to guide our thoughts, in a specific direction, we can replace any bad habit with a good one. This approach can bring  about wonders and marvel in our life. Keep in view, that the quality of a person’s life, depends upon his commitment to excellence, regardless of his chosen field of endeavour. Concentrate all your efforts, on one definite chief aim and you will attain it. We should be committed to concentrate. Whthat erever we are, we should be there and when we work, we should work and when we play, we shou8ld be playing. v

HOW TO WIN -6

You can Fly as High as
         You Want
Try to quantify, what you want in life and how you are going to get. Also, ask as to what you can expect from yourself. If you feel in inadequate in any areas, then try to improve your competencies and skills. Be sure to circumvent and evade indistinct and hazy aspirations and targets. Become skilled at recognizing, the information or education or facts or data relevant to your ambition and purpose. If you persevere, in focusing on your goals, it will be simple and uncomplicated, to decide, what is suitable to your objective. It will imply that you are proceeding in the right direction.
Distractions are common, whether you are studying, or working from home, or are in a formal office. These hundreds of interruptions vie for your time, energy and focus. They can be in the form of children, family, friends, neighbours, television, mobile phone rings, illogical critics and many more, like the door to door salesman or a saleswoman.
Owners of home based business and students studying at home, must always remember that the purpose of working professionally, from home is the same as that of other business. It has the added advantage of sharing lives with the children and your spouse, of being your own boss, instead of having somebody else as a boss and the freedom to work whenever it is convenient.
After retirement, I work from my flat and probably much harden, than what I did in the government. But I do it at my own manner and comfort. When I have to write to meet a deadline, I just sit down and focus on, what I have to do. The added advantage, of working from the home is, that there is no dress code and no seating code.  I can stretch my legs or relax  in bed and work on my lap top. When working and focusing, I do not pick up any phone and let them go into the voice mail. Only after I have finished my work, I return the phone calls. The result, of all this is, that I can pack more into the day, than many others can. This is all due to the power of focusing, prioritizing what is important, and what is not. You must strive, to feel fabulous and marvelous about yourself, about your capabilities, talents, and achievements and future prospectuses. Do not mull on your slip-ups and gaffes. You must pat, eulogize and commend yourself, for having accomplished, what you have done, so far. This is great tonic and picks me up. Always be upbeat about yourself. One quality of successful people is, that they are generally smiling, merry, positive and bright. They are aware, that positive thoughts expel and banish negative thoughts. They feel that smiling is the surest way to get rid of pessimistic and depressing thoughts. It is not something difficult to do, if we pay a little attention to our stance, and approach to other people as well as life. Smile says that I like you and welcome you, whosoever and what you are.  It is important not to let your circumstances run your life and work. If you let this state of affairs, to be in the driver’s seat, it is only a question of time, when you will be demolished and destroyed. Remember, whenever you work for yourself, from either home, or study in a school or college, or work for somebody in his work place, treat the same as any other real job. Some people go to work to play, some go to socialize, and some others just to pass time. Rewards are generally and directly proportionate to your productivity.
Therefore, it makes sense to work hard, produce the best results by staying focused. Intentions generally do not differ, competencies do.

Organizing Your Life

It is important, to keep a detailed check list, to evaluate and measure, whether what you wanted, has been achieved, in the way and in the time, you wanted to accomplish. Writing down as to what you want to complete, will prevent, no only putting off fires, but also regrets, that you could have done better. I have noticed that whatever gets written and noted down, gets done. Remember, that there is always, a scope for doing everything better, sharper and faster. This way, we can achieve our success more rapidly. Get rid of whatever is not required and make place for whatever you need.
Use your organizational skills to observe and monitor. If you can see, something, you can find it easily. Store the things, you frequently use, or need, in a way, that you can see them. We tend to forget whatever goes out of our sight. Hence, you should do the storage, in such  a way, that your things, papers and items are easily accessible. During winter all the summer clothing are packed or stored in almirahas, or boxes and you do the same with winter clothing, when the summer comes. The same principle, should apply to the things of day-to-day use. I, for instance, keep all my Bank papers and cheque books in one drawer of my working table and another one contains the items and accessories, like the IPod or MP 3 players, which are taken out once in a day during my morning walk.
Storage requirements do change from time to time. We need to make room for them and adjust to such requirements. The underlying principle is, that what you need, should be easily traceable, available and visible to the extent it is possible. Follow the principle, which my best-organized friend, Tulakdar, does. He says, that just as, we keep things in bathroom systematically, so that we do not have to run for getting soap or oil or shampoo, the same thing we should have done in our day to day living and working.
You can possess any gadgets like electronic organizers, or digital diaries or PDA or Personal Digital Assistants or Computers. These gadgets can be very useful and yet they are only part of the problem, as well as solution, to complete Your  To Do List. I have all these gadgets, but I personally prefer to use a paper diary. In fact, I use more than one diary and pad so that I do not forget whatever I have to do. We can make our mark, in life at any and every time. You do not have to wait for extraordinary circumstances, to raise high in your station of life.  Whatever you do, do it with a smile. It will take you to places.
Whatever others may say, you have to discover your own ways to accomplishing your own goals. Often, we fail to reach our hopes, goals, and dreams, because we do not follow them up any real systematic arrangement. We need to have both planning and a follow up action. This is equally essential and applicable, whether your goal is a big or small. You can read many books on how to succeed, you have a plan for your own goals and you follow it up vigorously. In short, be clear about what you wanted, plan for it and most important implement it.

Using Time Well and to a Purpose is a Continuous Battle
________________________________

When it comes to unkind criticism, put-downs, sabotage, and unfriendly competition the best strategy is to achieve, what others feel, that you cannot do. We all react, differently to criticism, sabotage and putdowns. Discover, as to how you are tackling the same and use the excellent technique, you can devise to deal with them. For working smarter, we need  to simplify, the way we operate and how we use our work style, to our best advantage.
Apart from the To Do List, which most successful people use, you might specify the tasks you would prefer to do in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening. Of course, you are free to change it, in case the need arises. For instances, there are certain fixed hours of Banks, if you need to go there, to sort out your personal matters. Shops do not open very early in the morning. So shopping necessarily has to be done in the later morning or evening hours.
Instead of running errands for the whole day, you might consider attending to all matters, when going in one direction, if they are geographically suitable, and convenient. Last week, while going to my dentist, for an appointment, I combined with a visit to the Bank, meeting my sister, who was hospitalized and doing some shopping. This was apart from returning the phone calls, which had remained unattended and unanswered, as well as catching up on the reading, when the driver was driving me around. I find that I am at my best early in the morning and so I attend to my highest priority work, which includes writing early in the morning or late in the night, when there are no interruptions. It is to have some schedule, so that you can fit all the activities, in accordance with the importance you want to give them.
During my prime time, I avoid meeting visitors as some of th wem linger on, long after the work, they came, is over. Most people would like to telephone or meet you, when it is appropriate and suitable for them.  I return their approach, by giving a time, which is most suitable to me. Evidently, it makes some people unhappy, that I do not receive them whenever they want to drop in.  But I have to stuck to my guns and if  some people want to meet me to discuss a few things, then they have to adjust to my timings.
Another thing, which you should be doing, is to have at spick and span atmosphere, environment and your working place. It is clearly a constant battle as we have a tendency to leave the things, on the nearest open space available. For instance, at the time of writing this piece, I notice, my digital diary, remote control of the TV, speakers for my IPOD, my shirt, my To Do List Diary, lying on my bed and an empty cup of tea on the side table of my chair. I do not attend to all these items, in putting their proper and right places in one go. When I get up, I pick up a few things and put them in their respective home. Incidentally, before finishing this piece, I got up to go to the bathroom attached to my study. It took me less than a minute to put all things in their correct places. Everything must have a home and it had better be there, to make it easy to retrieve it , for future use.
As a routine, I de-clutter at least four to five times a day, to prevent my study, my work place, my computer, from being a graveyard of miscellaneous items. If do not do the same, we get overwhelmed and inundated by them. A clean place is attractive to work. But it requires a lot of small effort to do so. However, I assure you, that it is worth it.

How To Be A Winner 3

Re-position Yourself  for
Better Times

God has given every human being a power to discriminate,  between  the best and worst, between excellent and terrible deeds and to know in advance, what will be in his best or worst interest. In spite of that, there are very few people who are willing to cash on that ability and change, for the positive and discard bad practices and tendencies that dent and harm you now as well as in the future. Disappointments and heartaches are a normal part of human existence. Only the hardships harden and sharpen us. For growth in life, you have to endure the winter of frustration, exactly like a seed and the sapling, which has to pass through many freezing winters, before it can blossom. In fact, there is no living e to be man in the world, however successful he may be, who has not faced some despair or gloom in his life.
The beauty of life, is that no failure and disappointment is permanent and it lies within our power to transform ourselves. A poet rightly says that, “Hope springs eternally in human heart.” In other words, whatever may be the position, there is always a room for hope and growth. After a fall, we can get up and begin again. But this message has to come from within us, and not from outside.

When difficulties smoother us and we feel that all is almost, then it is time to auto suggest to yourself, that past is finished and you can begin again. You have  to be, focused in whatever you do, as focus and the driving force and energy are interlinked. Our values and belief mould and shape our actions. Whatever be the position, you must never allow yourself to be, subjected to the negativity. Peter Drucker said, “ The best way to predict the future is to create it.” The best way to create your future is to meet it head-on. If you are not making the desired progress, it may not always be due to lack of efforts on your part. May be you are working hard, but not on the activities that should absorb all your attention. As there a constant change all around, we have to learn to adjust to it. Do not hesitate to have uncommon dreams. Remember that any special and singular ambition will require prudent, judicious and a sensible use of your time.

We all are supported and given confidence by other here we as, in our aspirations. Otherwise, we would not be where we are now, after a long journey in life. You should get up every morning with the resolve, that you would go to bed with a clear conscience whatever you wanted to achieve. Do not be one of those people, who hide behind the excuses, that I have nothing to achieve in my life or I have no excuse. As long as you are alive, and kicking, keep on striving to perform better and better. Do not be one of those crushed, who have lost the will. No harm comes to anybody for dreaming substantially and extensively. Pretexts, justifications and explanations are the gear and tools of the inept and hopeless. The reality is that such people have authorized and approved their fright and dread to paralyze their dreams and objectives. Do not hide behind the bogus security blankets of life. Go out and conquer the world.

Apply this Game Plan

A man is known by the company he keeps. If you spend time with people better than you, you will imbibe some of their qualities. If you spend time with positive people, you will become positive and better. It is for this reason that our scriptures advise to keep the company of holy and good men. You will learn the way, they live or talk or behave or work. If you spend with complainers and gouchers, you cannot help become like them. Life itself is brief and fleeting. The way to make the most of it is not only learning by hit and trial, but also from those, who have made of their life and achieved what you want to achieve.

We need to take care that we do not allow energy drainers, to sap our strength and will/ We need all the energy and will that we can muster to accomplish all the tasks we wish to do. We must be comfortable and enthusiastic in doing whatever we want to do or adoing, for our peak level performance. You might have noticed how ill health and hipsickness saps our energy. Negativity and habit of complaining all the time is a sickness of the mind.

There are some people and events, which are energy drainers. They should be avoided like the plague.

Do the things, as a fun and enjoy whatever you are doing, whether you are working for yourself or an organization. Only those individuals and organizations thrive, which have clear goal. There are opportunities like around. You must not wait for the opportunity to knock. It will never know. You, your life, your skills are the opportunities.
One vital pre-requisite for success is to be able to communicate, clearly and concisely. Regrettably, about 80% of problems with other people are due to poor communication and a good communication can tackle this trouble.
The people and situations around us are changing oand will change. Relationships go hey wire; friendships are broken and old colleagues. We should be ready to change with the change. Many conversations seem to go round and around, tempers flare, feelings get hurt, and directions get misconstrued,
Because we do not understand the other person’s point of view or change in this situation, The last courtesy, we owe to others is to understand their point of view by listening as to what they have to say.
When talking to others, we should focus on them. While we may not agree with them, the minimum we can do is to listen to them respectfully and reply to them politely even when we do not agree with them.
Remember that every person has exceptional knowledge, wisdom and his own point of view on the subject under discussion. Reduce or preferably eliminate the scope of arguments, sarcasm, disrespect, anger, resentment, and heartache.
You can add words like “Yes, I feel,,,,,,” “I respect your opinion and I see that ….” “I hear what you are saying and ……….” To sugar coat any differences and for saying “No”. Avoid  use of words, like “ You’re wrong.” “That’s stupid.” Or any other statement that erects invisible walls of defense or separation, between you and others.

How to be a Winner

Turn Your Creative
Spark into a Flame

Creativity and advancement invariably begin with an inspiration, thinking or a scheme. But, for many, the course ends there, because they had no plan as to what to do with it.
It is important to turn your ideas into an exciting activity, for giving you the edge. The objective of the edge is that you can become a leader in innovation and creativity, in your chosen reinforce a solid creative foundation in your life. This approach will facilitate innovation, and make problem-solving an easy process.
You need to appreciate and comprehend what you are obsessive or financial about in life. For accomplishing this, a clear approach or mission declaration or what truly drives and inspires will help you to concentrate on your creative gifts. A well calculated, planned foundation serve as a beacon on the path you want to tread. One thing you must learn to decide when to say yes or no to anything, depending upon, whether it will help your progression to your goal.
This course is crucial for inspired, artistic and inventive people, when they find themselves inundated by plentiful things to do and huge demands on their time.

Encapsulate Your Ideas

A member to times, both during the day and night, including at  midnight, a number of great ideas occur to all of us. Quite often, later on, we cannot recall those ideas or remember when it will be useful or possible to put them into action.

It can be as small a thing as depositing a cheque in the bank or making your payment for the goods you might have purchased, or sending insurance premium in time. It is important to create a system for translating your ideas into accomplishments. No hard and fast method can be laid down. I personally note down such things in a diary. It a diary is not handy, then I scribble the same down on a rough pad. I also use a mini tape recorder, for ideas for recording my ideas when going out of the house or when some idea occurs at midnight.

Each morning I collect all these ideas from my diary and other sources and start taking action. We have shifted to Dwarka, a suburb of New Delhi. I still have to go to central Delhi for some work or the other. I note down as to what is required to be done, in that direction, so that all commitments are honoured. For instance, a few days back, a friend invited for a lunch. It was followed by a TV recording which I had scheduled immediately after lunch. I further ended it by addressing a social gathering. It was all possible, because I had planned my day and what was to be done even during the journey of 45 minutes by car from my house to Connaught Place.

You can adopt any system that works best for you. Do not hesitate to be unusual and original in your approach. Experience shows that any time wonderful ideas, random thoughts, mental observations, worries, fears, and reminders keep encumbering us all the time.

By keeping a diary or tape recorder, you can transfer them to the same and keep your mind de-cluttered. Whatever is of general interest can be put in your diary. It is a good habit to record your mind’s ramblings and feelings over men and matters. This way, you can let off the steam over what you feel hurt or want to appreciate. This approach will  same, whenever it also enable you, to transfer whatever is going through your head to paper. You can put new ideas and dreams in your journal and try to implement the same, whatever it suits you.

I maintain a daily diary, which is almost a history of contemporary life in the country and how I feel about actions and dealing of others. Engage in activities that will entertain, amuse, and delight your imaginative and resourceful spirit. I download a few jokes every day so that I can enjoy a well-planned laughter, before going to sleep, also make it a point to read some humerous book or novel to cheer myself up. The objective is to keep your outlook fresh and your originality passionate. You can adopt a practice of  5 minutes of intentional laughing or reading jokes. The rationale is to encourage you to do something new and different that can revitalize your inventiveness and feelings.
Take time, to get tranquil and look into inner riches. What deeds, actions or activities keep you from your creativity? What situations in your life are diminishing your vigour and your ground-breaking productivity? Nurturing originality and initiative is a back-to-front occupation. If you are healthy within, you will be healthy outside.
Whatever may be the situation, keep your outlook and mindset happy and grateful. Express your gratitude for the simplest things, like jam-free traffic on the way to your house, or bright sunshine or good and kind neighbours. If you look around, you will find yourself grateful for all the good things of like television, domestic help to make your life comfortable or your friends or relations or things like even electricity or piped water supply, which was not available in India five decades ago. I recall that when for the first time we saw movie on the video cassette recorder, in 1980, we felt that it was a wonder of the century, that you could have a cinema theatre in your house. Mobile telephone which is taken for granted now and is totally commonplace, again we felt, was something reserved only for Gods. We need to express our gratitude for so many things right from scooters, cars, railways, aeroplanes and wonders of the modern medicines, which make it possible for man to lead quality and extended life.
Make a list of five things for which you are grateful every day. Along with gratitude combine appreciation, as appreciating the creativity, good looks, and endeavours of others has a snowballing effect and brings reciprocal rewards to you. I find that when I appreciate my secretary’s efficiency,  not only it makes him happy but he puts in double efforts in doing his job still better. On the contrary, when I try to point out the defects of my staff, it does not make them happy.  When I have to find fault with anybody, I find fault with a particular lapse and not with the individual. Negativism always puts people off.
Look at the universe as an exciting journey and never hesitate to have a go at assorted events. Failure is the only way to succeed. If you do not fail, then how will you learn the methods of success that suits your genius.   An inconsequential action for one person can be a huge victory for another. Owning a motor cycle can be a big jump for a person who has a cycle. Make it a point, to infuse your life by utilizing the talents you never believed that you had. You do not have to be creative on a grand or on a huge scale. In order to succeed in life, you must perform or do something. You will naturally ask, what action should be taken, when and why and where?
The answers to these questions are not difficult. Answers will depend upon what you want to accomplished and what kind of life you want to live. The answer to what to do next will depend upon your approach to the above questions. All answers to the above  will depend upon doing things, testing different method, understanding different ideas and discovering what will work best for you. We are to realize that each one of us is a different individual. However, the aim of each one of us should be to be the “Best of Best.”

Road Accidents-

Minimizing Deaths on Road: A world’s and country’s scenario.
Key facts.:
  • About 1.4 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes in the world.
  • Road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29 years.
  • Over 90-% of the world’s fatalities on the roads occur in low-income and middle-income countries, even though these countries have less than half of the world’s vehicles.
  • More than 1.6 lakh people die in India every year due to accidents.
  • Nearly half(46%) of those dying on the world’s roads are “vulnerable road users”- pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
  • Without action, road traffic crashes are predicted  to result in the deaths of around 2 million people annually by 2020 (1million = 10 lakhs)
  • Only 15% countries have comprehensive laws relating to five key risk factors: speeding, drinking and driving, use of motorcycle helmets, seat belts and child restraints.
WHAT CAN BE DONE:
Create safe road infrastructure by implementing all aspects of road safety.
  • Create and amend laws on road safety like changing from 304A, IPC, to a stricter law so as to create the fear of law among offenders.
  • Start teaching road safety from nursery classes like moral science to create more responsible citizens of for road safety.
  • Create a wing like NSS for road safety such as RSS (Road Safety Service) in schools and colleges.
  • Have a separate Road Safety Police/Traffic Police Wing, fix their responsibility and accountability for road safety.
  • Strictly enforce all the road safety rules so that the public should fear breaking them.
  • Ask manufacturers to produce safer vehicles and consider including. Also locks and mobile jammers while driving.
  • Strictly implement laws related to speed governors in goods vehicles/schools buses etc.
  • Restrict access to highways.
  • Promote/Publicise road safety more aggressively.

MINIMIZING DEATH ON ROADS by Kamalzit Soi in The Tribune dated 11.1.2012
More than 1.6 lakhs Indians die in road accidents annually. Death and injuries cause a considerable economic loss to victims, their families and the country. Still traffic injuries are not included in the health agenda despite being printable.

Every year the lives of almost 1.4 million people are cut short as a result of a road traffic crash in the world. More than1.6 lakh people die in India due to RTAs(Road Traffic Accidents). Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury.
Road traffic injuries cause a considerable economic loss to victims, their families and to the nation as a whole. These losses arise from the cost of treatment, including rehabilitation and incident investigation, as well as reduced/lost productivity (e.g. in wages) for those killed or  disabled by their injuries, and for family members who need to take time off work(or school) to care for the injured.
There are few global estimates of the costs of injury, but an estimate carried out in 2000  suggested that the economic cost of road traffic crashes was approximately US $ 518 billion. National estimates have illustrated that road traffic crashes cost countries 1-3%of their Gross National Product, while the financial impact on individual families has been shown to result in increased financial borrowings, and even a decline in food consumption. In India, according to a rough estimate, we lose more than Rs. 1,60,000 crore every year.
Road traffic injuries have not been included in the global health agenda for many years despite being predictable and largely preventable. Evidence from many countries shows that dramatic successes in preventing road traffic crashes can be achieved through concerted efforts that involve, but are not limited to, the health sector. But is it on agenda on our government in India, or for that matter Gujarat? No it is not.

         WHO IS AT RISK?
More than 90% of the deaths that result from road traffic injuries occur in low and middle income countries. Road traffic injury death rates are the highest in the low-and-middle income countries of the African and Middle Eastern region. Even within high income countries people from a lower socio-economic background are more likely to be involved in a road traffic crash than their more affluent counterparts.
Children and young people under the age of 25 years account for over 30% of those killed  in road traffic crashes. Road traffic fatality rates are higher in younger age groups.

From a young age, males are more likely to be involved in road traffic crashes than females. Among young drivers, young males under the age of 25 years are almost three times as likely to be killed in a car crash as young females.

Key Risk Factors

Road traffic injuries are preventable and can be prevented. Government need to take action to address road safety and accident prevention in a holistic manner that requires involvement of multiple sectors(transport, police, health, education, NGOs)
and that addresses the safety of roads, vehicles and road users themselves.

Effective intervention includes designing safer infrastructure and incorporating road safety features into land-use and transport planning; improving safety features of vehicles and improving medical services and post-crash care for victims of road-crashes. Intervention that targets road user behaviour are equally important such as setting and enforcing law relating to key risk factors and raising public awareness about these. Here are some key risk factors:-

Speed

An increase in the average speed is directly related to both the likelihood of crash occurring and to the severity of the consequences of the crash. Some other facts are below:-

  • Pedestrians have 90% of surviving a car crash at 30 km/h or below but less than50% chance of surviving the impact of 45 km/h above.
  • 30 km/h speed zones can reduce the risk of a crash and are recommended in areas where vulnerable road users are common(e.g. residential area, around schools)
  • Apart from reducing road traffic road injuries, lower average traffic speeds can have other positive effects on health outcomes (e.g. by reducing respiratory problems associated with car emissions)
Drink-driving

Drinking and driving increases both the risk of crash and the likelihood that death or serious injury will result.
  • The risk of being involved in a crash increases significantly above a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.05 mc.g (micro gram).
  • Laws that establish BAC of 0.05 mc.g or below are effective at reducing the number of alcohol related crashes.
  • Enforcing sobriety check-points and random breath testing can lead to a reduction in alcohol-related crashes by about 20% and have shown to be very cost-effective.
  • Penalties should be heavy and court should not be lenient with offenders.

Helmets

  • Wearing a helmet on a scooter/motor cycle correctly can reduce the risk of death by almost 40% and the risk of severe injury by  over 70%.
  • When scooter/motorcycle helmet laws enforced effectively, helmet wearing rates can increase to over 90%.t he
  • Requiring helmets to meet recognized safety standards is important to ensure that helmets can effectively reduce the impact of collusion to the head in the event of a crash.
Seat Belts and Child Restraints
  • Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of a fatality among front-seat passengers by 40-50% and of rear –seat passengers between 25-75%.
  • Mandatory seat-belt laws and their enforcement have been shown to be very effective at increasing seat-belt wearing rates.
  • If correctly installed and used, child restraints reduce deaths among infants by appropriately 70% and deaths among children between 54% and 80%.

Distracted Driving

There are many types of distractions that can lead to impaired driving, but lately there has been a marked increase around the world in the use of mobile phones by drivers that is becoming a growing concern for road safety.

The distractions caused by mobile phones can impair driving performance in a number of ways e.g. longer reaction times (notably braking (applying brakes) reaction time, but also reaction to traffic signals), impaired ability to keep in the correct lane and shorter following distances.

·        Text messaging also results in considerably reduced driving performance with young drivers at particular risk of the effects of distraction resulting from this use.
·        Drivers using a mobile phone are approximately four times more likely to be involved in a crash than when a driver does not use a phone. Hands-free phones are no much safer than hand-held phone sets.
·        While there is little concrete evidence yet on how to reduce mobile phone use while driving, governments need to be proactive. Actions that can be taken include adopting legislative measures, launching public awareness campaigns and regularly collecting data on distracted driving to better understand the nature of this problem.

They are sent to the states by  Ministry of Home Affairs which is responsible for ultimate maintenance of law and order in the country.

At the state level, State Service Commissions conduct the exam for police officer and those officers support the IPS officers in maintaining law and order in the state.  Many officers of the rank of DSP and SP belong to the state cadre.

Other officers below the rank of DSP are selected through selection procedure adopted by the department of police.

Responsibility of the police is to protect the lives and property of the people, many security and surveillance divisions within the police are there in the state:
Crime Investigation Agency, CES Counter Espionage Services, Traffic Police, Cyber Crime Investigation Wing, Economic Offences Wing, Motor Vehicle Tracking Wing, Crimes against Child and Women Investigation Wing are major.
