Silence

Sometimes

we maintain silence

to protect

we forget that too much of silence

creates a distance

in every beautiful relation.

STRESS BUSTER

STRESS BUSTER
                   Renee Singh*

Learning how to relax definitely enhances the quality of our lives by countering the negative effects of stress.

We manage to restore depleted energy levels, feel fresh and revitalized and we are re-charged to deal with the pressures of our modern day lifestyle.

We know that our minds and bodies are integrally linked: the state of one affects the other. We also realize that as we are constantly running in the emergency mode, for which, our mind and body pay the price.

Frequently one is feeling frazzled and overwhelmed and we know it’s time to bring back the balance into your life.

Stress lowers our immune system and makes us prone to various diseases whereas a relaxed mind helps to strengthen the defense system against diseases and also trigger’s “happy hormones” within us.

Ideally for us, our home should be our heaven, a perfect refuge to get away from the tensions of the outside world. I personally am not in favor of designer homes as they lack warmth and comfort of our own zone.

I believe that our house should reflect our personality, only then it becomes a home. But then we can always opt for one room where one can create an environment that beats the stress within our systems.

It is very important to protect our self from  the effects of stress in our life and I would highly recommend a few tips, which will help you create the right mind and body balance:

Make your physical space

Create a space within your home which is own private den. When you are there you should feel most relaxed as it is your own private area where you can be with yourself. Read, write, reflect. Negotiate with your family and tell them that this is a place where you can spend  “me” time and  you must not be disturbed.

This space should be a supportive environment where you can accomplish your tasks in peace and privacy.

Make your own mental space

Once a week create opportunities where you can reflect on your own personal issues and assimilate the changing thoughts and feelings that arise within you. Distance yourself from the demands of your loved ones and take stock of your own needs.

Ask your family to respect your time.

Take a long bath

This is one of the most relaxing things you can do.  Get away from all the negative energies and put your mind in a fresh perspective.

Ensure that family members share the household tasks.  This way you can have adequate time for your own self.

As we progress in relaxing ourselves, we continue to create a feasible environment around us by making an effort towards the following factors.

The art of placement

Your environment strongly influences your sense of well being. Find ways to make your immediate environment conducive to your state of mind.

Whatever makes you happy should be around you. Hang mirrors to reflect negative energies and use good Feng Shui techniques to see to it that your surroundings are in harmony with the universal life energy to encourage prosperity and health into your life.

Use natural materials
Sleeping between freshly laundered cotton sheets is always very relaxing. Natural materials look and feel good. Change into comfy cotton clothes when you get home to feel relaxed.

Let in light
Natural light always affects our mood positively. Artificial light causes headaches, low energy and eye strain. Let in as much natural light into your home as possible.

Soft lighting

During the evening, relax in the glow of some soft lamps.

Wake up early
Early morning light always revives you. Feel the energy of the morning sun, and bask in the glory of the long and fulfilling day that lies ahead of you.

Ventilation

Open the windows in your house everyday to let in fresh air and let out stale smells.

Bring nature indoors

Houseplants enhance the beauty interiors. You breathe in nature at its best. Keep herb pots in the kitchen to  benefit from their therapeutic qualities.

A garden retreat
Create a small terrace garden where you can sit and relax. It is a great joy to sit amidst
 pots of flowers.

Breathing

YOGA AND DEEP BREATHING

Deep breathing or breathing during yoga reduces behavioural irritation produced from stress and work load.

Yoga strengthens the immune system. Body’s efficiency to work depends upon the strength of the immune system. Weaker the immune system, greater the possibility of attracting the mental and physical diseases.

Learn yoga, practice yoga and deep breathing to remain mentally and physically fit and healthy. Also check, your both the nostrils are used while you breathe.  If right nostril is not helping you breathe in and breathe out, lie on your left shoulder in such a way that your arm is under left side and left leg of your body. Put your body weight on the left ht shoulder and it will open the right nostril.

I think that some nerve is there that is pressed and nostril opens. I have done it many times.

Same way, if left nostril is not helping you breathe in and breathe out, lie on your right shoulder in such a way that your right arm is under right side and right leg of your body. Put your body weight on the right shoulder and it will open the left nostril.

Practice, feel and be healthy. Left nostril gives oxygen to right side of body and right nostril gives oxygen to left side of body, my yoga teacher told.

WOMEN

“WOMEN have taken over

“WHO says women are a weaker sex? Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru had once remarked: “When a woman moves forward, the family moves, the village moves and the nation moves.”

Women are natural organizers and have an innate flair to perceive problems. Successful handling of Assembly Elections in Punjab by Chief Electoral Office Kusumjit Sandhu has reinforced the point.

No major untoward incident from any corner of the state, putting right people at the right place, achieving a record 78.6% polling and, to top it all women votes exceeding men votes (79.11% to 78.09%)- these achievements have put this strong woman on a pedestal where we don’t cry for women empowerment, rather exemplify the fact that ‘women have taken over.”

Continuing

A Chief Minister of Punjab for than eight consecutive years, Partap Singh Kairon turned Punjab into an economic powerhouse. A no-nonsense administrator, he did not let procedures come in the way. The death anniversary of this builder of modern Punjab falls today (February 6)

First as minister and later as Chief Minister, Kairon laid the foundation of modern agriculture in Punjab. He piloted various land reforms that empowered the actual cultivator. The processes that Kairon began of state-sponsored consolidation of land, construction of access roads and electrification would ultimately enable Punjab to emerge as the state that fed the nation single-handed.

Cancer

The good news about cancer.

With the treatments available today, it is possible to hit the disease for a six.

Harmala Gupta*
Yuvraj Singth (the world renowned cricketer of India) is stricken with cancer today, but why the long faces? All kinds of people had cancer, battled with it and emerged winners. The ‘C’ word no longer evokes the dread it once did and there are several good reasons for this.

See the photograph (in The Tribune  of February 6, 2012 published from Chandigarh, India) of Lisa Ray, a model and Bollywood actor who fought back a rare cancer of the white blood cells with advanced treatment, is among the more famous survivors of the disease.

More people are alive today with cancer and enjoying a good quality of life than at any other time in human history. This is encouraging news and a is a tribute to the progress made by scientific research thanks to which we know how different cancers occur and grow. This in turn has led to the development of more effective drugs and treatments. Looking back over the last 20 years alone, the progress has been phenomenal.

Progress in treatment

Whereas two decades ago cancer specialists had only mutilating surgeries, highly toxic chemicals or radiotherapy treatments based on a cobalt source to offer their patients, today not only have these treatments been greatly refined but treatments that target specific genetic mutations in the cell, hormonal treatments and immunotherapy all a role to play and have made cancer less of a death threat.

Gone are the days, for example when a women’s entire breast was removed, including the lymph node’s under her arm which severely impacted her ability to use her arm again, after a diagnosis of breast cancer. Removal of the malignant lump in the breast, followed by radiotherapy, is the preferred course of treatment now at any reputable cancer institution.

Radiotherapy too is administered by a machine known as a linear accelerator which uses an x-ray technique that administers radiation more precisely than the earlier generation radiotherapy machines. These new machines are so accurate that the negative side-effects associated with exposure to radiation have been almost eliminated. This has resulted in both enhanced survival and a better quality of life after treatment.

Cure rates

The cure rates for cancers in children in the West have climb up to a remarkable 80 per cent. This is true also for certain adult cancers like lymphomas and breast cancer. This once again makes the point that the battle against cancer is being won by using a number of techniques and approaches which include stem cell therapy and bone morrow transplants. In fact, so effective are these treatments for certain cancers so that no time is lost in using standard treatments which are unlikely to impact them. Drugs to prevent certain breast cancer are also being talked about these days.

The answer for the future surely lies in an even more intimate and detailed understanding of how cancer cells proliferate and what genetic changes in a cell trigger a malignancy. The key lies in more research and clinical trials. At cancer conference around the world, it is the data collected by treating doctors in their clinics that ha to be matched and married to research being undertaken in laboratories. This is where support for research on cancer and for the development of drugs needs to be undertaken by a public institution rather than by private pharmaceutical companies alone. The National Cancer Institute in the U.S is an example is an example of one such institution which has contributed in a major way to the progress made in the treatment of cancers both in the U.S and world wide.

Matter of time

It is true that there are still cancers that are more intractable and difficult to treat than others. But certainly it is but a matter of time before they too will become less life limiting. What needs to be factored in here is the need for each one of us too to be more vigilant when it comes to diagnosing cancer. Should we have an unhealthy lifestyle, use tobacco consistently in any form or have a history of a particular type of cancer in our family we must go for regular check ups. As we hear time and again when it comes to cancer the earlier you catch it and treat it the better.

So, while we may feel sorry for Yuvraj, let us remember that when it comes to treating cancer successfully we are today in the golden age and Yuvi has number of factors working in his favour. He is young, suffers from no other chronic conditions and is healthy given his sporting background.

More than that he has shown time and again that he is man who can rise to the when asked to do so. What he now needs from those around him and from all of us, his well-wishers, is an equal belief in his ability to fight back and hit cancer for a six.
