Work and Life Balance

Subodh was married to a beautiful dame from the countryside. His dame needed more time than he could devote. His performance and productivity as well as quality of decisions at work was going down and down. His partner was whining all the time for Subodh’s declining level of concentration at work. Neither wife nor partner was happy or satisfied. Subodh was at wits’ end.

All this was telling upon his health. Wife always found that Subodh remained busy in his work and not attention was paid to maintain relatives. Relatives too complained and remarked bitingly “All marry but they don’t ignore the relatives.” Wife wished that all family functions and marriages in the relations must be attended. She also wished that Subodh should sit and talk with her for hours. Subodh should have time to go to Cinema. All these were not being handled by Subodh comfortably. His health deteriorated and his behaviour became irritable.

For wife, it was another problem. Every body in the family was worried. Parents thought some super natural problem was there. They secretly started consulting “Babas” for finding a remedy to Subhodh’s problem. They were of the opinion some “bad soul” has affected their son. But wife was educated and did not believe much in this kind of “faith” or “faith healing”. Out of respect for elders, she used to company her parents-in-law. Many efforts by these “Babas” failed to bring Subodh to his normal behaviour.

As the time passed, the problem persisted and mental peace of the family members also flew. All – Subodh’s parents’-in-law, parents, brother and sister-in-law all were worried. Worry could be judged by just looking at their faces and their reactions to the situations in daily life.

Time passed and Subodh was blessed with a son. Another bond. Subodh was overburden.
He was unable to meet the continuous nagging by his wife for lack of time for her and her son. Subodh was finding himself torn in performing 3 dutites – one at work, 2nd handling wife and third keeping pace with time demands by elderly parents.

One day, he came across a business mentor. After attending the seminar, when he was having a cup of tea with the mentor, he reluctantly opened his heart to the mentor. Her eyes full of tears were telling more than words. Mentor, seasoned and matured person, advised: keep 11 months for work and full one month for home.

Subodh came home and asked his wife to come and sit with him. After settling down properly and making the wife ready to listen, he disclosed in a very polite way. “Today I met a very intelligent, mature and saint like person who had come to give a talk in the seminar.” Wife was listening with an awe. “I told him my problem of time. I told him that I wish to devote time to my family, but my work engagements do not allow me to do so. If I devote time to family, then work suffers and if I devote my time to work, then family suffers. What should I do sir?” Further Subodh confessed, “Very politely that gentleman told me. Your problem is a problem of life and work balancing. This problem is not only with you but with most of the people. You are over stressed between two lives. When you are in the office, you think about the family and when you are at home, you think about your work. Isn’t it?” “Yes, yes, sir” I answered to the mentor. “Sir how can I over come this situation?”

“Very simple.” 1. Be proactive. Using “Things To Do sheet” and planning for the next day at last night i.e. before the working day, you will become proactive.”
2. Work for 11 months and enjoy full 1 month.

“So, my dear, lovely wife, let’s decide from today that for 11 months you will not ask me anything and I will work only. And on 12th month, I will not ask and not go to work and will enjoy fully with you and son and family. No questions. Agree.”

After sometime, the wife nodded affirmatively i.e. yes. Now everyday nagging by wife was replaced with a smile in the hope that my husband will be free in 12th month of the year.

Every family function was attended with great fervour. No regrets, no complain. Always enthusiast wife, ready son and happy parents went and enjoyed the functions in the family circle.

11 months went by. 12th month came. Without anybody’s asking, a week prior to starting of 12 month, Subodh planned for family’s outing on a hill station. For a week, they stayed at the hill station, did hiking, tracking, enjoyed boating and river rafting. After a week when they came back, he had another plan. He and his wife joined a one week dancing classes. They learnt dancing together. Another plan, music and singing plus painting classes. All this made wife so happy that she does not speak a single word and waits patiently for this 12 months.
During the past 4 years, they have visited many hill stations and have known new people and new culture.

His wife one day came and told that she is planning to start Free classes for slum dwellers in teaching dancing and painting. Life is now has a purpose and meaning for the grumbling couple. Their son likes to live with grandparents. Grand parents for him are God. They love, laugh and always take care of him. Grandfather is always seen walking with the grandson. Grandson holding his grandfather’s finger feels as if he is fully safe and secure and nothing can happen to him.

Everyday, while praying to God for grace, Subhod thanks his mentor who with his guidance changed his dull life into really meaningful one.

PLANNED CHILD

A child is an angel. Majority believes and says like this but why are “terrorists” in this world of angels? My mind many times goes on pondering on this question. World not only has international terrorists, the people who terrorize and escape the eye of law are in plenty. Terrorizing or using force in day to day life is an inescapable trait of humans at large.

WHY THIS HAPPENS? Many times I think and have inferred:

CONCEPTION can be categorized in 3 stages.
1. Pre-conception:

It is the period after marriage when the couple wishes to conceive a child. Continuous listening to holy hymns and reading holy books by the would-be parents will affect the thinking of the child, I believe.

Mental state of the would-be parents is of great importance in pre-conception phase of planned child. Father’s role in this is of 10-20minutes, mother’s role is for full 9 months. So, following behaviour by the mother does contribute a great deal in forming and constructing the behaviour pattern of the coming child.

• Watching programs that are not violent in nature keeps the child away from violent behaviour. My experience.

• Remaining away from quarrelling over trifles like financial and social matters does improve the behaviour pattern of the child. – I trust.

• Looking by would-be mother at the picture of mythical character is when they were children e.g. Lord Krishna’s picture, Lord Rama’s Picture, Sri Hanuman’s picture, Lord Jesus Christ’s picture when he was born do contribute in forming good.

• Mental peace and listening to music that gives peace to the mind is really very useful. It makes the child more intelligent and quick learner.

2. During Pregnancy:

• Regular consultation with the expert or a doctor benefits a lot.
• Saving the would –be mother from verbal attacks, social stigmas and negative situations and news enable the child in womb grow mentally and physically strong and wise.
• The members of the family should heed the dictum: ANALYSIS IS PARALYSIS.
• Over analyzing the situations, events and creating panic does affect the mother and the child.
• It should be kept in mind that what mother eats, feels and listens affects the child in the womb.
• Elders in the family should take proper precautions to avoid any unpleasant situations in front of the would-be mother.
• Special care should be taken by the elders to make the mother-to-be happy and smile and not create such incidents and circumstances as may affect her mind adversely.
• Violent behaviour and violent situations should be escaped by the would-be mother.* Would be mother should read holy books, listen to holy hymns visualize holy figures from history.

3. Post Delivery Precaution:
Coming of the child in a family irrespective of gender should be celebrated. Elders: change your attitude towards females. They are in no way less than your males.
Child is a child and must be welcomed in this world. Don’t start hating and don’t hate the females.

Elders love kissing and over caring the newly born kids. The child is not that immune from the infections. Control and save your newly born kid.
Mother’s milk is nectar to the child. Minimum for the first 6 months, the child needs it. This keeps the child immune to illness in coming years of life.
Replacement to mother’s milk is cow’s milk.

I am not a doctor. I just know and have shared with you all.

ANGER MANAGEMENT

I used to feel aggressiveness in my nervous system and my behaviour with others was said to be arrogant. Loud talking, winning an argument and losing a friend or good relation were my bad habits. And above all, for all this I did not feel any remorse and held others responsible for any wrong behavour.

But from the inside, I felt it is wrong and I should manage it. Yesterday, an Ayurveda from JIVA Ayurved centre was talking on a TV channel perhaps Care World. He gave very simple remedy to manage anger to a caller on phone.

The remedy I practiced and found today that I am in control of my voice and behaviour. The burning sensation in my brain nerves is calm.

I bought a small bottle of almond oil (Badam Rogan) and a nasal dropper.

• I dropped a few drops of almond oil in my nostrils yesterday evening.
• I again dropped the oil today morning .
• I have found that my head is calm and I feel talking to others with a smile
than talk arrogantly.
• What an easy and effective way to manage anger! What I could not do for so many years, that I achieved overnight. Wonder!

My observation: The oil has worked on my nervous system as mobile oil works on the parts of the engine of car. I will continue for many days so that I may become totally tolerant of others and the circumstances. Situations and circumstances are 10% rest 90% is our reaction to the situation and circumstances.

Self-Control

Swami Sivananda says that Self-Control is control exercised over one’s self. It is the power or habit of having one’s emotions, desires and appetites, senses and mind under control.

Control yourself first. Then you can control others.

Self-control clears the mind, strengthens will-power and judgment. It elevates your character. It gives you freedom, peace, bliss and joy.

He who conquers himself is greater than the commander-in-chief who conquers a country.

Control the senses and mind. You will attain self-realisation.

Conquer thyself. Till you have done this, you are only a slave of your senses.

He who rules his passions, desires, cravings and senses is the real king of kings. Crowns are nothing for him.

Every temptation that is resisted, every evil thought that is overcome, every desired or craving that is destroyed, every wrong action that is checked paves a long way to the attainment of everlasting peace and bliss.

Self-control gives you power to withstand trial, to bear suffering and to face danger.

Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do.
– Lou Holtz.

STRESS BUSTER

BEAT it with your attitude.
BY RENE SINGH
A Chandigarh based Pschotherapist

Each individual is unique and each of us responds differently to a stressful situation. The problem of stress is not taken as seriously as it should be.

Modern science, despite major technological achievements, has so far failed to find a way to measure it. Most people who are stressed don’t even know how critical their situation is. Some even fail to respond as they suppress their symptoms wonderfully.

Familiarity with stress is very important. It is only through identifying with the condition and understanding it that we can learn to handle how to handle it.

Observing the body’s response to stress:

• Identifying physical signs of stress.
• Understanding one’s genetic and environmental make-up objectively.

These factors are very important in identifying a condition.

Managing Stress:

• Recognizing stress reaction.
• Reduce further production of stress reaction.
• Address the stress reaction and chemicals already produced.
• Manage the residual stress.

Stress is not always harmful but it has its benefits too. For attitude is the most important in life. If we keep that going, nothing in the world can get to us.

Focus on Change:

Focus on change is the key once you have managed to identify a condition, you should be able to change it.

Change is the only constant:

Change brings in:

• New information
• New demands
• New challenges.

The human being has a habit of resisting anything new initially. Anything unknown we have to deal with causes stress.

BEST APPROACH

• Analyse the situation
• Assess the need for our purpose.

A positive focus means you recognize the benefits of opportunities around you and use them to your advantage.

Changing the internal system:

Set up filters within yourself to cut down the impact of external stressors. To deal with stress this is very vital. For example, “ I hated noodles two years ago. No I love them.” It is how we decide to reconcile our mind.

END OF ANNA HAZAREJI'S FAST UNTO DEATH.

We, the Indians, are thankful to Govt. of India and congress party president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, Law Minister Moilyji and Pranab Mukherji as well as P.Chdambaran ji for accepting the demand of the people of India for presenting the Jan Lokpal Bill in the coming session of Parliament and ensuring that the Bill is passed law by the Parliament. The wise acceptance of the demands of people of India forwarded by Hazareji is most welcome. The confrontation between between the Govt. and the public is now over. Anna Hazareji end of the fast unto death has brought to end the likely confrontation and tension between people and government.

Congratulations to Government and the people of India. This is the victory of the democracy. Non-violence has great power. We have started feeling Government cares for people's sentiments.

CORRUPTION IN INDIA

I support the cause of Anna Hazare the 72 years Gandhian. I have signed the petition against corruption by Avaaz.com. I alongwith my friend Mr. Amarjit Singh Bhatti have decided to offer ourselves for going to jail for this cause on 13th April, 2011 for which respected Anna Hazare has given a call. May God give long life to Hazareji. My country is suffering from the evil of corruption by politicians, civil servants and other beaurocrates. Corruption starts from the top. If a policeman in the street or on road asks for a favour, it is called corruption and the entire government machinerty jumps into action but when a police station is sold for crores of rupees, no mechanism works. The poor man is becoming poorer and poorer day by day. The pulses are the only source of nutrition of the poor and its price is Rs. 125/- per kg. whereas the earning of about 20% people in India does not exceed Rs. 3000/- per month. A revolution like the French Revolution of 1789 cannot be ruled out in India.

The Jan Lokpal Bill can save this kind of situation. I appeal to Govt. to consider and concede the justified demand of Anna Hazare. We want clean people to lead us.

WORLD CHAMPION

INDIA WIN CRICKET WORLD CUP 2011

It took 18 years to Columbus to find a financer for his historic voyage that discovered modern America. Now after 28 years wait, India became World Champion of Cricket on 2th April, 2011 at Wankhede Statdium Bombay by beating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets. Sachin Tendulkar started his career 21 years back. India won the championship under the captancy of Mohinder Singh Dhoni and other key players are Yuvi, Bhajji, Nehra, Yusuf Pathan. President of India Smt. Pratibha Patil had a cup of tea with team India.

Semi final was played at Mohali between India and Pakistan. The semi final was watched by Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Gilani and Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India. Both expressed the hope of good relationship between two neighbouring countries. The age old (since 1947) rivalry and enemity covered by the media affects the minds of the young people. Muslims are also good humans. I have guru who is a Muslim. Dr. M.A.Zahir helped me in all ups and downs of my life. I touch the feet of three people with great reverence they are my papa, my mama and my Guru. Thereafter, my parents in law who have given me their beautiful, intelligent and wise daughter as wife.

I am blessed with two kids daughter Rimzhim Keshap, B.Sc., MBA and son Master Ankush Keshap a budding Tennis Player. I trust that one day he will bring laurels to India.
I love my country. I respect my country. I owe my life and achievement to my country. May God bless all the peace loving countries and people to flourish.

POET IN Q

Do you know what’s worth fighting for;
When it’s not worth dyin’ for?
Does it take your breath away;
And you feel yourself suffocating.

Does the pain weight out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide.

Did someone break your heart inside?
And you are a ruin inside.

When you are at the end of the road,
And you lose all sense of control;
And your thoughts have taken their toll;
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul?

Your faith walks on broken glass
And hang over doesn’t pass.

Nothing ever built to lose by your side,
And you are a ruin inside.

Did you try to live on your own?
When you burned down the house and home of your own.

Did you stand too close to the fire,
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone.

When it’s time to live and let die
And you can’t get another try;

Something inside this heart has died,
And you are a ruin inside.

Positive Personality: YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

Positive Personality: YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

Positive Personality: YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

Positive Personality: YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

,,

GOD IS YOUR CHILD.

INNER VOICE

God is your child.
By Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

God is the very core of your existence. The Divine principle is not someone in the sky, it is inside you in the form of your consciousness. Know that you have abundance of grace within you and God is your very own. Happiness, joy and even devotion comes by grace. Whatever one gets in life, that comes with grace.

You have always thought of God as a father, up n the heavens somewhere. When you think of God as a father, you will want to demand and take from Him. Why do you want to pray? What do you want to ask? A good father already knows what to give. Assume you are the most beloved of the Divine; then surrender happens. Surrender is not an action, it is an assumption. Non-surrender is an ignorance, an illusion. Surrender begins as an assumption and then it reveals itself as a reality. The world is made up of both; the seen universe and the unseen consciousness. It is the form of the Divine but the Divine is formless. There is no “two”, no duality.

For God, there is no you and I. He can only see Himself in everything and everyone. No one has any independent existence. God is not an object of senses but the feeling of feelings, the presence of the presence, the sound of silence, light of life, the essence of the world and the taste of the bliss.

You are pregnant with God. You have to take care of this pregnancy and deliver this Child into the world. Most people do not deliver. God is your child who clings onto you like a baby until you grow old and die. When you see God as a child, you have no demands. Your surrender to a child is more authentic because there is no demand.

The Child clings onto the devotee, crying for nourishment. Sadhana(spiritual practices), Satsang(music and meditation), and Seva (service to society) are the nourishments. Atheists lurk around the corner. Doubts, disbelief and ignorance are the atheists in your mind. So better take care.

Father Taught Financial Management

I have a good, intelligent, enterprising friend who is an entrepreneur and is P.G in Technology i.e. M.Tech. He mentored his son studying in 6th standard for business. His wife a P.G in Dietetics used to be busy in the morning to shout at the son for getting up early in the morning and be ready for school. Mr. Jassar who is resident of Canada and running business in India was all surprised by the time his wife wasted in the morning to wake up their then only son.

Morning scene:
Son in the bed, hiding his face with the pillow and half-in-sleep:
Mom to son,
“ Get up my son, it is morning, you need to go to school. In case you will be late it will reflect a poor grade on your report card in “responsibility” column."
Son murmurs back,
“ A few moments more mom. Please allow me to sleep.”

Mom (busy in the kitchen) will sometimes shout from the kitchen,
“Get up or I will pull you out of the bed holding you from your ears.”

We are Punjabis and in Punjabi words the phrase is:
“Kan phar ke bahar sutna hai. Phir changa rahenga.”

It was a daily routine and Mr. Jassar’s tolerance level went on depleting to the level of annoyance and one day he sat with his wife, discussed and consulted with her the issue of the behaviour of their son over the cup of tea. At that time, they had a son only. But now they have two kids son and a lovely daughter. The complete home they have. A home without a daughter is like a hostel.

Mr. Jassar proposed to his wife:
“ My dear why can’t we work out a solution that makes our son more responsible. If the son does not get up let him sleep as long as he wishes. How long will you trouble yourself to keep him waking up? At least, one day he will have to get himself up without your assistance.”
“But he will be late for school,” humbly his wife a nice responsible caring mom replied.
“Let him own his own responsibility right from today,” Mr. Jassar politely answered.

“This is not possible and is a mere dream. I bet.” Wife contested.
“Let me handle the child. Don’t wake him up right from tomorrow.” Mr. Jassar advised and instructed. Mr. Jassar though said politely but firmly.

Next day, wife did not wake up the child.

Child got late for the school. When he got up, he asked his mother un hn hn,
“Why you did not wake me up. I am late for the school.” The child complained to his mother.
The complaint had no effect either on mom or dad.

Before the mother could reply, father replied:
“We have decided, right from today, we shall not wake you up. You have to own your own responsibility of going to school. You have to learn and be wise.”

Child was surprised at this stark and stout unexpected answer. He was never expecting that the day will come when he will have to leave the ‘comfort zone’ and ‘helping hand” will be withdrawn.
He felt as if he has woken up from a deep sleep and dreaming state.
He surrendered and politely enquired from his father,
“What should I do dad? I don’t want to lose my classes.”

“Use a wake up ringing clock.” Dad said.
“Where can I get this clock?” the child asked in a low tone. The tone reflected the child needs guidance and solution for the problem.

“From the market.”

Dad & son went to the market and bought one ringing clock.
Dad also made a list of the activities needed to be done by his son once he was awake and up . Dad pinned up the list on son’s notice board in the room. The looked at the list and frowned. But he could not contest with his dad.

Next morning:

Clock gave 1st, 2nd and 3rd ring. On the 3rd ring the boy bounced out of the bed and started brushing his teeth, went to toilet and by the time his mother was ready with breakfast, the child was on the breakfast table.

Mother was feeling relieved today. She offered the breakfast with love, affection and relaxed mind. Child enjoyed the breakfast. Child felt the breakefast was more tasty than other days.

Wished the parents “Sat Shri Akal” and sought their blessings and went to attend the school. Son used to get ride to school and Dad had to pay $ 4 every day to one of his neighbours for this service.
Days went by. The child one day asked Mr. Jassar,

“ Dad I need a bi-cycle. How much does it cost?”
“About Cn.$200.”
“I wish to buy one.”
"OK. Go ahead” , Dad replied appreciatingly.
“But I don’t have any money on me.”

Mother went on listening, silently but attentively.
Dad said," look, my dear son we have started all afresh by immigrating to Canada. So we as a family don’t have enough funds for all this."

“How can I have money then?”
“Earn it.”
“How can I earn it?”
“Let me think for a day I will be back on this”, dad said.

Next weekend
“I have an idea.” Dad started the talk with his son.
“Tell me.”
“ In my office, lot of papers need to be arranged. You may come to my office on weekly off-days and holidays. I will pay you Cn.$100 per month.”
“One more idea, it costs to take a ride for going to school.”
“It can save you $ 80 if you go and come back on foot from school which is less than a km from our home.”

Idea struck to the mind of the child and child agreed to attend the office on off-days and holidays and even became ready to go to school on foot as he wanted the bi-cycle desperately.

The child started attending the office of the dad and arranging his papers and doing his odd jobs in the office.
Mother started to enjoy more life at home in the absence of child and his dad.
After 3 months, Mr. Jassar asked his son, “Why don’t you buy the bi-cycle?”
“Dad I have only 120 dollars. 100 earned plus 20 saved. I have 80 dollars short.”
Mr. Jassar offered, “Now I can lend you 80 dollars but I will charge interest.”

“What is interest Dad?”

“If you borrow money from others or banks, you use them. For that use you need to pay a small amount as percentage. That is called interest.”
“Right! I will pay,” agreed the child.
Mr. Jassar as promised loaned the child sum of 80 dollars.

The child bought the bi-cycle and was happy that he has bought the bi-cycle with his own money.

Another day, when the son was coming on foot from his school, the neighbour of Mr. Jassar who was bringing his child from the school, offered lift in car to the son of Mr. Jassar.

The child replied, “Thanks uncle. I will go home on foot I have a promise with my dad

The neighbour was surprised to hear these words from the 6th grade student.

Now after a period of about 4/5 weeks, the child finds that bi-cycle is well enjoyed and is needed no more.

He asked his father, “Dad, I wish to sell off my cycle. How can I do that?”
“Go to the internet and ask for bids on the internet.”

These days, the child, checks the bid everyday on the internet. Price offered for old cycle is 100 dollars, but the child is not mentally ready to sell. He wishes better price.

What the big business schools cannot teach the students in many years’ teaching that a dad taught within a month or two to a child of 12 /13 years – the financial management.
